Around 70 young people from across the Isle of Wight took part in the IOW FIRST Tech Challenge Scrimmage on 23 March 2026, gaining hands-on experience of robotics, engineering and the exciting career opportunities available locally.
Delivered by the Solent Careers Hub, the event brought students together for a day of immersive STEM activities and practical learning. Hosted with support from BAE Systems at their Cowes site, the Scrimmage showcased what modern workplace experiences can look like in action.
Students took part in a variety of workshops and activities designed to inspire curiosity and creativity. These included a technology tour of the BAE Systems site, a LEGO robotics maritime project, an archaeology session delivered by Dinosaur Isle, and engineering challenges led by industry professionals.
A key highlight of the day was the opportunity for students to develop and test their own robots, supported by mentors and the BSG Robotics Ultraviolet Team. Their enthusiasm and expertise helped students explore robotics in a practical and engaging way.
The Scrimmage forms part of a wider programme designed to give students meaningful workplace experiences. Alongside the event itself, students will also visit local employers with business mentors and continue developing their robotics projects in school sessions throughout the year. By the time these learners reach Year 10, they will have completed at least 15 hours of meaningful workplace experience, building skills, confidence and a deeper understanding of future career pathways.
The event was made possible thanks to collaboration between educators, employers and volunteers, with additional support from Red Funnel who helped with transport for delivery partners.
Most importantly, the day saw students fully engaged, having fun and discovering the wide range of opportunities available to them right here on the Isle of Wight.
