Isle of Wight Students Shine in Annual Mock Trial Competition

The Isle of Wight’s annual Inter-Schools Mock Trial Competition held on Saturday 7th December, once again highlighted the talent and enthusiasm of local students, offering them a unique opportunity to step into the world of law and justice. Held at Newport’s Crown Court, the event brought together seven schools from across the island, with Ryde School ultimately emerging as the winner in a close contest that showcased exceptional performances from all participants.

Since its inception in 2012, the Mock Trial Competition has provided thousands of young Islanders with an invaluable insight into how the UK legal system operates. The experience of presenting cases, examining witnesses, and arguing points of law in an authentic courtroom setting has inspired many students, with around 70 participants going on to pursue careers in law.

ICP Trustee Nick Hayward, who first established this event during his tenure as High Sheriff in 2012, expressed his gratitude to the many individuals and organisations who have supported the competition over the years, “I am so thankful to everyone who has generously volunteered their time to make this event a success year after year,” he said. “It’s remarkable to see so many children come along, even in atrocious weather and on a weekend, to take part in this unique experience. We are also incredibly grateful to Rouse Ltd. for their sponsorship, which helps us continue to provide this opportunity for young people on the Isle of Wight.”

The annual competition sees students playing the roles of barristers, witnesses, clerks, and jurors as they navigated real-world legal scenarios. Judges drawn from the local legal community commended the participants for their professionalism, preparation, and passion for the task at hand.

The Mock Trial Competition offers more than just a glimpse into the workings of a courtroom—it equips students with critical skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and analytical thinking. These are vital tools for their future careers, regardless of whether they choose the legal profession.

As one of the highlights of the Isle of Wight educational calendar, the competition continues to bridge the gap between schools and the wider community. It is a testament to the value of hands-on learning experiences in fostering ambition and understanding in young people.
