The High Sheriff’s Inter Schools Mock Trial Competition is set to return on Saturday 7th December offering students from participating Isle of Wight schools the unique opportunity to experience first-hand the legal process in action.
Sponsored by Rouse Ltd with a beautiful handmade island glass trophy. The event is held at Newport Crown Court, and has been a staple part of the academic year for over a decade, allowing students to step into the roles of barristers, witnesses, and defendants, arguing a real case before a qualified judge.
Originally launched in 2012 by ICP Trustee Nick Hayward alongside retired judges Tim Milligan and Tim O’Flynn, the event aims to enhance students’ public speaking, teamwork, and confidence while offering a rare insight into the workings of the legal system.
The competition is supported by a dedicated team of legal professionals, including His Honour Judge Tim Mousley KC, Rob Packham, ex-Deputy Director of the National Crime Squad, and John Trotter, a senior partner in a city law firm, who volunteer their time to mentor the students.
Last year’s winners, The Island Sixth Form, were closely followed by Christ the King College and The Priory School.
Sarah Coetzee, Careers Lead of the Island VI Form said: “Involvement in the programme has led some of our students to consider a legal career with a more realistic understanding of what academic study and a career in this area would entail. We also had a younger and less experienced joint team competing, made up of students from Carisbrooke and Medina Colleges. I cannot speak highly enough of the support and encouragement they received from the competition organisers, enabling them to participate and gain much from their experience including developing a range of transferable skills and building their confidence.”
