Exciting Maritime Careers with UKSA

Looking for an alternative to traditional post-secondary education? UKSA, based in Cowes, is offering fully funded maritime programmes that provide an exciting route into global employment. These hands-on courses are perfect for those who want to combine adventure with career development, gaining valuable qualifications while experiencing life on the water.

With over 38 years of expertise in sailing, watersports, yachting, and maritime engineering, UKSA’s world-class facilities and expert mentors ensure students develop the skills and confidence needed for success in this dynamic industry.

UKSA’s Maritime Programmes:

The Maritime Advanced Programme – This is UKSA’s traditional two-year course, equivalent to two A-levels. Students need five GCSEs at grade 4 and above to enrol. The course is structured as 60% theory and 40% practical, making it a great option for those who prefer a balance between classroom learning and hands-on experience.

While this programme provides a strong foundation for the maritime industry, it also opens doors to careers in the sports and physical activities sector, including fitness, coaching, and event management. As part of the Outdoor Pathways curriculum, students will gain their RYA Dinghy Instructor qualification by the end of the course, enabling them to work for leading companies such as UKSA, PGL, Neilson Active Holidays and Mark Warner.

Graduates earn UCAS points, giving them the option to continue their studies or step straight into the industry.

The Maritime Foundation Programme – UKSA’s alternative to a traditional college course, this two-year programme is 75% practical and 25% theory. Students must have four GCSEs at grade 3 and above, including English and Maths. If they do not achieve a grade 4, they will have the opportunity to retake their GCSEs at UKSA alongside their training.

Year 1: Focuses solely on becoming a Watersports Instructor (Dinghy Instructor). By the end of the year, students will be qualified to work as instructors, opening opportunities at organisations such as UKSA, PGL, and Tackt-Isle Adventures.

Year 2: Prepares students for careers in the yachting industry. They will gain essential qualifications to enter sectors such as the Superyacht Industry, work on Tugboats and fisheries as well as Flotilla yacht companies.

For young people seeking an exciting, hands-on learning experience right here on the Isle of Wight, UKSA’s courses offer a fantastic alternative to classroom-based education and a direct path to adventure-filled careers at sea.
